Simplicity Landlord 2010

Again with catching up on past stories. Awhile back I picked up this beast looking forward to the upcoming snow season. Of course it’s useful for so many other things, like taking off deers at the knees when they run towards the sickle mower!

It is a Simplicity Landlord 2010. My wager is circa 1965ish. Unlike common modern lawn tractors, this has a horizontal shaft engine. This particular unit has a full thru-shaft type crankshaft giving the engine 2 PTOs.

In my case the front PTO is used for the snowblower. The rear PTO goes to a device called the “bevel gear box” which is the achilles heel for these model tractors. Mine is in mediocre shape, not amazing, but not ready to explode either.

I had some problems with it running 100% initially, those were ironed out by replacing the points with this magical device I bought from amazon.

Future plans – see how it deals with heavy snowfall this winter. I didn’t really have everything in tune for last years snowfall before it was all gone, but I have high hopes. In time I will rebuild the bevel gear box and also open, reseal and close the leaky transmission. A good coat of paint is in order at some time but I’m not sure when that will happen.

I’ll post videos sometime this coming winter of it doing its thing.

  1. Greetings!
If you have not found out yet your Simplicity 2010 would be a 1967.
The 2010 was my first garden tractor now I have more than I like to admit including two 1965 101 Landlords.

That transistor module you bought to fix your points problem, it is listed as not for battery ignition applications. How is it working for you? Does your charging system work? If not, that may be why the transistor module is OK but I do not know much about those. Wondering if it might be a future option if I have trouble.

I have the same snow blower, it works damn well when everything else is setup correctly. If anything is off by even a little you will have problems with the belt slipping and burning or jumping off the PTO. I had to make a few replacement parts on my own when they broke but it was not difficult and nothing has ever worked better for me than that Landlord and the snow blower.

I see you have a rototiller. I have one as well but do not have all of the parts needed to hook it up and use it. I wonder if I send you a couple photos of what I have on the tractor and on the rototiller if you can send back photos with anything missing so I can begin searching for or fabricating what I need.

Number one issue I have had with these old tractors and belts is missing belt stops. If you have problems with the belts jumping off there may be missing belt stops. I have made a bunch of my own, pretty easy to do with some small diameter steel bar and a vise.
    Happy holidays!

    1. Thanks for your post and the info.

The transistor module is pure magic. I’m fairly certain that most of my problems with the points system was just because mine was poorly weatherproofed. I probably could have been back in business if I’d just went through the motions of solving that issue, but the transistor unit seems far superior to me. The difference was night and day, the installation was ridiculously simple and the maintenance on that portion has been 0. As for the charging system, it’s fine. I haven’t had to jump, charge, replace or otherwise fiddle with the battery since I first procured the beast. I can’t say that for my “daily driver” lawnmower. I did have to replace the generator/starter belt, but that’s to be expected. I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t the original belt on the unit :)

All of my implements are working fully and are trouble free with the exception of the sickle bar. That does need some repair currently as the knife sections have separated. I’ll be happy to get you some pictures of the rototiller mounted in place. That little dude can dig like crazy so when you use it be sure to put a stop in your lift handle otherwise it will dig to China before you know it. I did have to procure my own pulley for the drive system underneath, I’ll share pictures and info on that also when the season is proper.

I’m not sure if it’s good or bad, but the Landlord will probably become more of a showpiece than a tool. I don’t see myself getting rid of it, but the need for it has diminished with my recent acquisition of a Kubota b2320. The only implement that I don’t have for the Kubota that I had on the Landlord is the sickle mower which I rarely used anyway.

If I don’t get you some pictures before late Spring feel free to prod me and I’ll try to get them posted.

  2. hey guys i just got a simplicity 2010 do any of you know what size belt it takes for the pto to engage the mower I’m new yo this model of garden tractor ?

  3. Just broke the starter/generator belt on a simplicity landlord 101….how did you get replacement belt on,pull the drive shaft?

    1. Probably too late to help you, but yes. I was able to get the little disc thingy out of the way and get the belt jimmied around it pretty easily.
